preparation/recovery?
One of the reasons why Haiti's earthquake’s death rate is so high in the 2010 is there are almost no earthquake preparations. Some of the scientists from another country, they use GPS (Global positioning system) to monitor tectonic plate movements, and they found out that Haitian authorities were about danger. However, the country is extremely poor and its government can't help anyone. The GPS receiver picks up signals and sends it to observatories. Observatories collect the data from GPS. GPS collect the data from the earth's crust and that information is quite accurate. They used this technology to predict the earthquake, but they can't prepare for the earthquake. There are no ways to prepare completely and have no damage from the natural disaster. Scientists work hard in monitoring the natural disasters and hopes that predict them and help people. However, until then, knowledge of what to do and always being prepared for an earthquake is the best way to reduce injuries, deaths, and damage to environments and people.
I think one of the technologies that we can prepare for the earthquake is seismic retrofitting for buildings. When the earthquake occurs, all structures that placed on the ground are move with the ground. You can see the phenomenon that the bus is sudden stop and the passengers in the bus is fall down in to the front. Alike this phenomenon, when the ground is shaking, the structure that has inertia is shaking together and column, crossbeam; shear wall that compose the structure is affected by earthquake. Seismic retrofitting means the plan or designs the structure safe for the earthquake that has possibly happened. When the earthquake happened, the seismic waves come out and pass the structure. Then they got damage from them. The earthquake proof design, which means the structure, is not affected by earthquake. This is impossible, so as much as possible the structure is bear with the effect by earthquake is one of the technologies to prepare for the earthquake. This technology is seismic retrofitting. The principle of seismic retrofitting is when the seismic wave passes the structures (buildings, bridges, and etc.), design and plan substantial the structure by foundation layer and structure is not slip each other. To do this, we apply the designing method that reinforce the steel frame in the column, and make the concrete thicker from the wall. One of the reasons why that Haiti earthquake has so much damage from earthquake is that their traditional house can't endure from earthquake. Therefore I think the technology that can prepare for the earthquake is the seismic retrofitting for houses or buildings. Then, we can reduce the damage the people and environments from the earthquake.
This technology is affected in the many factors. However, I think the seismic retrofitting is affected in environmental. The seismic retrofitting is help to endure the structure (buildings, bridges, columns, and etc.) from the natural disaster, and in this situation, earthquake. Therefore, the seismic retrofitting helps the environment stay safe. This is the positive impacts of environmental factor. When the earthquake happened in one place, then that place's environment is destroyed by earthquake. However if we do seismic retrofitting, it helps the structure to stay safe and there are no wastes to damage the environments. But this technology is not only good for environments. This is the negative impacts of environmental factor. When we use seismic retrofitting technology, we need to use concrete, steel frame, and etc. The concrete and steel frames gave bad effects to the environments. When we use those things to do seismic retrofitting, then there are toxic substances are coming out and gave bad effects to the environments. So some ways this technology can damage to the environments. These are the benefits and drawbacks for my technology.
